چکیده
Objectives: This study was undertaken to see the role of AFB microscopy and culture for the diagnosis of extra pulmonary tuberculosis. Design and Setting: This descriptive study was carried out at PMRC TB Research Centre King Edward Medical University/Mayo Hospital Lahore. Subject and Methods: Symptomatic suspects of extra-pulmonary TB were asked to submit their respective samples for AFB smear and culture. Smears were prepared and stained by Zheil Neelsen method and were subjected to culture on Lowenstein Jensen media. Results: The smear and culture results of 260 extra-pulmonary specimens were analyzed. Smear positivity was seen only in 3.85%, and the culture on Lowenstein Jensen media showed positivity of 18.45 %. Microscopy when compared with culture showed sensitivity of 20.84% and specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100%, negative predictive value of 84% with false positive rate of 0 and false negative rate of 79.17%. Conclusion: Smear microscopy is not found to be a sensitive tool, giving a high false negative rate when compared with culture. Thus culture is reliable and gold standard for bacteriological diagnosis of extra pulmonary tuberculosis.

Utility of Conventional Techniques for Diagnosis of Pulmonary and Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis: Study from a Tertiary Care Hospital in North India
Though pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains the most common presentation, extra pulmonary tuberculosis (EXTB) is another significant clinical problem and due to paucibacillary nature, remains a challenge for diagnosis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility of smear microscopy and culture for detection of Mycobacteria in pulmonary and extra pulmonary specimens. This retrospective stud...

Abstract Background and objectives: Direct smear microscopy, because of its simplicity, rapidity, low cost and relatively sensitive is a suitable method to detecting pulmonary tuberculosis. This experiment was aimed at determining the best method for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis among three kinds of staining methods: Fluorochrome, Ziehl Neelsen and Tan Thiam Hok . BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES As isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in culture requires a long time, there is a need for simple rapid method for direct detection of M. tuberculosis from clinical specimens. Amplified nucleic acid hybridization assays such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have shown promising results. In the present study, the sensitivity of PCR assay was assessed over smear mic...

متن کاملIs it valuable to examine more than one sputum smear per patient for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis?
The simplest, cheapest, and fastest diagnostic method for tuberculosis (TB) is the detection of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) by microscopy. The algorithm advised for the diagnosis of TB recommends examination of three consecutive sputum specimens from TB suspects for the presence of AFB. In the present study, we evaluated the contribution of each specimen to the final detection of TB suspect patient...
